Cork based PT Technologies is a
leading provider of solvents for surface preparation and cleaning in the power,
telecoms and aerospace industries. Around 92% of PT Technologies’ products are
exported to markets in Europe, the Middle and Far East,
Australia and New Zealand.
However, James O’Brien MD was keen to improve their cross-border sales in Ireland and so
sought advice from InterTradeIreland.
Through
InterTradeIreland’s Sales and Marketing Programme, Acumen,
PT Technologies engaged a consultant with expert knowledge of the market and
its key players in the North.
‘’The
company was already doing some business with Bombardier Shorts in Belfast but
as a result of Acumen, we were able to expand our work with the company and
this now generates over €0.25m in revenue for us each year.” Explained Mr O
Brien. “Not only have we seen an increase in our business in the North, but we
now have a better knowledge of the model that we need to use to pitch for work
elsewhere – thus generating even more business for us.’’
Our Acumen Programme aims to help SMEs to grow their
business on the island
of Ireland by targeting
new cross-border markets. The programme does this through a number of tailored
financial supports for eligible companies.

PT Technologies, a leading provider of solvents for surface preparation and cleaning in the power, telecoms and aerospace industries, has an annual turnover of €4.5m.
The original company was co-founded in 1982 by James O’Brien and evolved into PT Technologies in the late 90s following a technology transfer deal with a USA company. This resulted in a management buy-out, leaving Mr O’Brien as the managing director and principal shareholder, and a move to new company premises at Watergrasshill, where 24 people are currently employed.
Mr O’Brien said: “A significant number of companies in the engineering sector encounter the threat of environmental emissions and pollution, as well as personal health and safety dangers attributed to the handling of harmful solvents. Essentially, what we do is offer these companies a bespoke solution to help combat these problems – reducing the risks to the environment and staff.”
Around 92% of PT Technologies’ products are exported to markets in Europe, the Middle and Far East, Australia and New Zealand. However, Mr O’Brien was keen to improve their cross-border sales in Ireland and so sought advice from InterTradeIreland.
“I had some limited experience of the market place in Northern Ireland, but we were doing very little business there, so I went to InterTradeIreland hoping that they could help me investigate opportunities to develop this further,” he said.
Through InterTradeIreland’s Acumen programme PT Technologies was able to engage a Co Down-based consultant Michael Morrow.
“Michael had an expert knowledge of the market and its key players in the North. He helped us to identify our key targets in that marketplace and encouraged us to focus on developing our relationship with Bombardier Shorts in Belfast.
“We were already doing some business with Bombardier, but as a result of his help, we were able to expand our work with the company and this now generates over €0.25m in revenue for us each year.”
But the value of working with Acumen has also brought the company more benefits than sales.
“Not only have we seen an increase in our business in the North, but we now have a better knowledge of the model that we need to use to pitch for work elsewhere – thus generating even more business for us,” explained Mr O’Brien.
“In my opinion, the Acumen programme is the essential ingredient for any business which is considering developing its cross-border business. The team there are experts in their own field and made the whole process very simple for us.”
