McElwaine SMART Technologies

Co.Fermanagh

Fermanagh based McElwaine SMART technologies provide monitoring systems for domiciliary healthcare and security. Systems which allow people with debilitating conditions, particularly the elderly, to continue to live at home with the reassurance of 24-hour a day support.

However recognising the need to expand their business across the island, particularly in the South, Managing Director John McElwaine got in touch with InterTradeIreland. With the help of consultancy support available through the Acumen programme , the company was able to develop their business in the North Dublin area in particular as a result of market research carried out and new contacts generated.

Mr McElwaine explained. “Acumen proved to be very fruitful, and within just five months we were seeing increased profits in the region of £40k from Southern sales alone.’ He added

“For us, Acumen has proved to be fantastic in helping us to reach into the Southern market. We have seen a notable increase in business there and an increase in our annual turnover as a result. I would strongly recommend for other companies to approach InterTradeIreland if they are considering doing cross-border business.”

Our Acumen Programme aims to help SMEs to grow their business on the island of Ireland by targeting new cross-border markets. The programme does this through a number of tailored financial supports for eligible companies.

One of the most exciting innovations in the healthcare industry in recent years is in the area of telemonitoring, which allows patients to be monitored around the clock and from the comfort of their own homes, while also being educated and empowered to manage their own health.

A Fermanagh company, McElwaine SMART Technologies Ltd, which was established in 2006 as part of the McElwaine Group, is at the very forefront of a global leap forward in this field.

Twelve full-time staff are employed at their base at Lisnaskea, providing monitoring systems for domiciliary healthcare and security. These systems mean that people with debilitating conditions, particularly the elderly, can continue to live at home with the reassurance of 24-hour a day support.

McElwaine SMART’s systems allow patients with chronic conditions such as congestive heart failure or diabetes, for example, to test their vital signs using one of their devices, which then automatically send the readings directly to the monitoring centre in Lisnaskea.  If the readings are outside the normal and safe parameter, an alert is instantly sent out, triggering an appropriate response from the patient’s clinician.

Managing Director John McElwaine said: “We can provide an end-to-end solution for all domiciliary healthcare and security requirements. We have the capability to engage with people across their developing needs, as they get older, and can offer a monitoring package which develops alongside the patient’s needs over time.”

Recognising the potential for expansion within Ireland, Mr McElwaine contacted InterTradeIreland under the Acumen programme and Dr Eileen McGloin was assigned to the company in October 2007.

“Dr McGloin helped us to identify opportunities for new business within the public and private healthcare sectors in the South,” said Mr McElwaine.
“She offered us expert advice on how to approach the companies in that market and pitch our ideas and services to them, leading to the generation of new contracts for us.”

Following on from the one-year consultancy project, the company was keen to build upon the links that had been established with firms in the South in order to develop closer working relationships with them.

As a result, the company applied for Acumen Sales Salary Support and were able to employ Sales Executive Marian O’Neill.

“Marian concentrated on developing our business in the North Dublin area, working with the contacts that we had established with Dr McGloin’s help,” explained Mr McElwaine. “This proved to be fruitful, and within just five months we were seeing increased profits in the region of £40k from Southern sales alone.

“For us, Acumen has proved to be fantastic in helping us to reach into the Southern market. We have seen a notable increase in business there and an increase in our annual turnover as a result. I would strongly recommend for other companies to approach InterTradeIreland if they are considering doing cross-border business.”

The company recently agreed a strategic alliance with German technology giant Bosch, with the aim of collaborating on a range of research and development commercialisation projects within the telecare field.

“We believe that applications of telemedicine will continue to grow as the capacity and capability of remote technologies in general increases, so are dedicated to continuous research and development in this area,” explained Mr McElwaine. “Our partnership with Bosch enables us to do this and means that we can offer the highest quality systems to our customers.”
