About The Forum

The broad objective of the event was to provide a consensus view from leading economic experts on the likely extent (depth and duration) of the current global downturn and to consider goverment and private sector responses in terms of stimuluis remedies and transformational opportunities withn an island context. The Forum was addressed to a select group of policy makers from both jurisdictions, economists, prominent economic commentators and business leaders who combined their expertise and knowledge on the extent of the downturn and searched for innovative strategic responses.

Dr David Dobbin C.B.E

InterTradeIreland Chairman

Dr David Dobbin CBE has extensive international business experience in the food and drink and packaging sectors and is currently Group Chief Executive of United Dairy Farmers, a leading UK dairy processor cooperative based in Northern Ireland. He is actively involved in promoting economic development and serves on a number of public and private bodies including the Strategic Investment Board of Northern Ireland and Invest Northern Ireland.

Brian Lenihan

TD Minister for Finance

Brian Lenihan was appointed as Minister for Finance on 7 May, 2008. He has served as Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform from the 14 June, 2007 to May 2008. Prior to that he had been Minister of State with responsibility for Children at the Department of Health and Children, the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, and the Department of Education and Science.

Adam S.  Posen

Deputy Director, Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington DC

Adam Posen is deputy director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC, where he has been a senior fellow since 1997. He has been a visiting scholar at central banks worldwide, including the Federal Reserve Board, the European Central Bank, and the Deutsche Bundesbank. In 2006 he was on sabbatical leave from the Peterson Institute as a Houblon-Norman Senior Fellow at the Bank of England.

Linda Yueh

Fellow in Economics, University of Oxford,Oxford

Dr. Linda Yueh is a fellow in economics at the University of Oxford and a visiting professor at the London Business School. Her expertise is in economic and business issues, particularly the macro-economy.

Martin Weale C.B.E.

Director, National Institute of Economic and Social Research, London

From 1979 to 1995 Dr Weale was successively Research Fellow, Senior Lecturer and then Fellow in Economics in the University of Cambridge. He has been a visiting scholar, as the Houblon-Norman Fellow in the Bank of England in 1986-7 and then in the Federal Reserve Bank, Minneapolis, in 1993. From 1995 to the present he has been Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

Frances Ruane

Director , Economic and Social Research Institute, Dublin

Following her undergraduate studies in Economics, Politics and Statistics at University College Dublin, Frances studied at Nuffield College and was awarded the degrees of B.Phil. and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. She then went on to hold positions in the Industrial Development Authority, the Central Bank of Ireland and Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario before becoming Associate Professor in the Department of Economics in Trinity College Dublin. In December 2006 Frances became Director of the ESRI.

Michael Smyth

Head of School , School of Economics, University of Ulster, Jordanstown campus

Mike is a prolific commentator on the Northern Ireland economy, trends in the region’s labour market and public finances. He writes regularly in each of the Belfast newspapers and appears on both radio and TV media to comment on the economy. He is a contributing editor to First Trust Bank Economic Outlook and Review and to Regional Studies. His areas of expertise include Local and Regional Economic Development in Northern Ireland; Energy Economics and eCommerce.

Dan O’Brien

Senior Editor/Economist, Economist Intelligence Unit, London

Dan O'Brien has covered EU affairs and many western European countries at the Economist Intelligence Unit since joining in 1998. Previously he worked as an economic and political affairs adviser in the foreign service of the European Commission.
