TANAISTE SAYS IMPROVING COMPETITIVENESS IS KEY TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Seven out of 10 local companies say lack of market awareness is the main barrier to tapping into €2bn South-North trade.
An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan TD has highlighted the need for businesses to improve their competitiveness at InterTradeIreland’s ‘Time for Business’ roadshow in Letterkenny.
“The challenges posed to Ireland by the current economic conditions are immense, but we are not alone in this challenge. The economies of many of our neighbours, trading partners and competitors are similarly affected,” she told 110 delegates at last week’s event in the Radisson SAS Hotel.
“By taking necessary actions now, we can ensure a speedy return to export-led growth which will increase the levels of trade and money flowing back into the country.
“The key challenge is to maintain and enhance Ireland’s competitiveness in the fullest sense. By building on our existing strengths and addressing our weaknesses, we will position ourselves for economic recovery.
“I firmly believe that partnership and prosperity go hand in hand. By encouraging better use of our collective resources we can expedite trade and business growth, create an environment which makes it easier to do business across the island and increase the global competitiveness of individual companies and our economies.
Ms Coughlan said InterTradeIreland had an important and unique role to play in helping small businesses to grow across the island through a wide range of programmes and partnerships and networks which emphasise the commercial benefits of collaboration.
